Some car lovers splurge on higher-octane gas, in hopes of either increasing the life of their cars or helping the environment by boosting their miles per gallon. Not so: higher-octane gasoline can actually be harmful if your car isn't specifically built to use it -- and studies say that it doesn't improve mpg either. Plus, the production of the premium gas is an inefficient process that requires more crude oil to manufacture than regular gas.
