Some car lovers splurge on higher-octane gas, in hopes of either increasing the life of their cars or helping the environment by boosting their miles per gallon. Not so: higher-octane gasoline can actually be harmful if your car isn't specifically built to use it -- and studies say that it doesn't improve mpg either. Plus, the production of the premium gas is an inefficient process that requires more crude oil to manufacture than regular gas. It's old news that not all cars are meant to use the fancy stuff, but Koerner offers a good explanation of why.
