Assistant Yard Supervisor

 

Purpose

 

The Assistant Yard Supervisor must interface with the Rail Supervisor, representatives of the Association of American Rail Roads and Norfolk Southern Rail Road, and TLX rail car Load and Unload crews. The overall objective of this position is to assign, direct and assist with rail operations for customer loading and unloading.

 

Essential Duties

• Drive the New Vehicle Transporters and Transfer Crew to and from bay locations, inbound receiving and load staging areas
• Accurately complete all receiving, storage and releasing paperwork
• Ensure that customer vehicles are pulled in an efficient and accurate order according to customer requests and TLX needs
• Assign work to New Vehicle Transporters, Transfer Crew and temporary workers
• Assist New Vehicle Transporters, Transfer Crew in training new temporary workers
• Observe New Vehicle Transporters, Transfer Crew and temporary workers as they perform daily tasks and instruct them on appropriate behavior and/or performance issues as needed
• Complete the daily movement worksheet and return it to the Yard Supervisor as the end of each shift
• Inspect van to ensure proper maintenance of vehicle and make repair requests to Yard Supervisor
• Utilize radio to communicate with management personnel in a professional manner
• Insure that all customer vehicles are gassed and contain proper documents
• Keep Yard supervisor informed of any significant department issues
• React to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned
  

General Description

This position ensures yard associates are transported to and from necessary yard locations so they may efficiently store and park vehicles in accordance with quality standards established by the American Association of Rail Roads, the manufacturer and customers' standards.

Additional Responsibilities (but not limited to)

• Various duties as assigned or required to help the facility function as a team environment
• Understand and follow TLX policies, including but not limited to company safety policies
• Notify supervisor of any workplace hazards or unsafe conditions
• Read and understand VIN numbers
• Work with limited supervision
• Other duties assigned by Yard Supervisor, Operations manager and/or other management personnel
• Attend meeting as required
• Communicate problems to Yard Supervisor

Working Conditions

• Almost all work is performed inside vehicle
• Sedentary work, must sit in van majority of the work shift

Minimum Requirements

• Excellent understanding of yard layout
• Ability to instruct others effectively and give directions or feedback to others in a diplomatic manner
• Ability to read and interpret vehicle identification numbers
• Ability to drive in extreme weather conditions
• Ability to pass with 80% accuracy the Safe Driving quiz
• Ability to read and speak English
• Excellent vision
• Ability to keep confidential any work documents seen or conversations heard during performance of job duties
• Ability to drive both automatic and manual transmission vehicle
• Valid state driver license
• High school diploma or equivalent
